January Transfers: Transfers Bound To Happen

Back to transfer season as players look for new clubs and clubs look for new players. This transfer window opens on the 1st of January or New Year and closes on the 31st of January. In this piece, we look at the transfers that look imminent.

After an explosive transfer during the Summer, teams are expected to only buy players that are essential for key positions. Don’t expect any big name permanent transfers to happen during this window.

Top Transfers of January 2018

The top transfers most likely to happen in the January transfer window:

  • Michy Batshuayi

Alvaro Morata has hit the ground running in the premier league since his arrival from Real Madrid. Chelsea need a second striker they can depend on and Michy isn’t quite there yet. The Chelsea striker has been unable to find his place in Chelsea’s first team. Simultaneously, Michy needs game time with the World Cup around the corner. The most logical outcome will be a loan move to a club where he get’s more first-team opportunities. Possible destinations include West Ham, Marseille, Everton (perhaps).

  • Ross Barkley

Ross Barkley had canceled his 35 million move to Chelsea during the summer transfer on deadline day. Barkley has been out with a hamstring injury since August. Tottenham have emerged as the next possible destination for the English midfielder. Sissoko and Wanyama have picked up long-term injuries. Barkley would do well to fill in provided he isn’t injured. Don’t expect Chelsea to bid on him again, but stranger things have happened in the transfer market.

  • Alexis Sanchez

The best player at Arsenal will become a free agent in the summer of 2018. Arsenal cannot seem to get him to sign a contract extension. So, one of two things will happen. Either Arsenal sells him in the January transfer market for some profit or lets him go for free in the summer window. Wherever Alexis decides to go, the club will need to afford his high wage demands. So possible destinations include Manchester City, PSG and even perhaps a move back to Barcelona.

Other possible transfers include Van Dijk (to Liverpool), Ghoulam (to City), Rabiot and several others.
